Featuring some superior storytelling by director Andre De Toth, an amazing musical score from David Buttolph and a near-perfect cast, House of Wax holds up really well today. For a 1953 feature, it boasts some pretty creepy subject matter, what with bodies covered in wax, and some pretty graphic melting sequences. The film itself is a remake of the 1933 Lionel Atwill-Fay Wray thriller Mystery of the Wax Museum but achieves so much more than its predecessor on the strengths of its sharp color, excellent performances, and yes, the 3-D effects. Estimated monthly costs for housing put Playa Vista and Brentwood at the top. The same night, Sue arrives at the museum after hours to meet with Scott, but Jarrod had sent him on an errand when he heard she was coming. Rent in Los Angeles is considerably higher compared with the national average. This aligns with the current standard in many other major cities like Washington, D.C., and Boston, but doesn’t even come close to the higher prices in San Francisco and Honolulu. Although the entire newspaper angle of the earlier film was eliminated and Mystery was set in the year it was released, whereas House of Wax was set in circa 1902, the two films have many similarities in plot and dialogue. Wallace receives a letter that indicates Jarrod had miraculously survived the fire, though he is now bound to a wheelchair and his hands are crippled, leaving him unable to sculpt.

Sue attends the grand opening of the museum with Scott and is troubled by how the Joan of Arc wax figure resembles Cathy. Jarrod overhears her and claims he based the figure on photos of Cathy he saw in the newspaper. He then hires Scott, who is a sculpting protégé of Wallace, as an assistant and asks Sue to model for a new Marie Antoinette wax figure, as she strongly resembles his earlier one.
California housing crisis so bad once-modest towns have become ‘million-dollar cities’
Believing Cathy's body was used to create the figure, Sue talks to Detective Lieutenant Tom Brennan. He agrees to investigate Jarrod and his museum and Sergeant Jim Shane recognizes Averill as criminal Carl Hendricks, who is wanted for breaking parole. Averill is then taken in by Shane for being in possession of a pocketwatch belonging to a missing deputy city attorney, though he states that he found it. For example, if you’re the type of person who likes to see a movie every week, it’s good to know a ticket costs around $17.89. If grabbing a pizza with friends is your ideal night on the town, it’s best to know the average cost for a pie is $12.99.
What’s good about this particular piece of the cost of living in Los Angeles, is that it’s all optional. If one month the cost of a movie ticket edges your budget into the red you can skip it. Angelenos love staying active, whether that means hiking the surrounding hills, running, cycling or trying out a calming yoga class on the beach. However, this is only one area of all the cost of living elements that create your goods and services category. Everything you like to do, but could live without, fit in here. Depending on your insurance coverage, and how often you find yourself in a doctor’s waiting room, healthcare will impact your cost of living differently each year.
Meanwhile, Sidney Wallace, a wealthy financier, is contacted by a wheelchair bound Jarrod, who has survived the fire, but claims that he suffered permanent loss of his hands and legs. As he can no longer sculpt, Jarrod has hired assistants, the deaf-mute Igor and talented sculptor Leon Averill, to help him recreate his wax figures, and using a new procedure he has devised, build another museum. Jarrod says that, as he can no longer create beauty, he plans to make a horror museum and expects that the museum will be profitable. After being shown Jarrod's basement laboratory, where plaster-of-paris figures are dipped in a vat of boiling wax, Wallace agrees to finance the museum. When Sue sees the figure of Joan of Arc, she is shocked by its likeness to Cathy, which, except for its dark hair, is exact, even to its pierced ears.

While living in La La Land will cost you 51.9 percent more than the national average, roughly 4 million people living in this desert oasis make it work — and so can you. Definitely, one of my top films from the 50s, House of Wax is now widely regarded as a classic. It’s genuinely scary in parts, terrifyingly fun, and extremely well done. Apparently, the viewing public has changed its mind in the past 70 years as House of Wax now has a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, and was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress in 2014. Price, of course, riding the wave of House of Wax, went on to fright film glory in his many Roger Corman-produced Poe adaptations that came after. He even managed to revisit the “disfigured genius out for revenge” trope to great effect in the Dr. Phibes films.
This means a lot of fresh produce, seafood and leaner cuts of meat. Living in Los Angeles can make for an expensive night out when it comes to eating. Though you can find a deal at an inexpensive restaurant (where the average meal for a single person is $16.50), a three-course meal for two at a mid-range establishment averages $90.
Later, at the station, Scott and Sue thank Brennan for his help and Sue expresses an additional thanks for the use of his coat. Price portrayed Prof. Henry Jarrod, an ingenious sculptor of wax statues and part owner of a wax museum that is burned down by his business partner in an attempt to collect insurance money. Soon thereafter, the partner and his girlfriend go missing, and Jarrod, who was thought to have died in the fire, shows up alive but disfigured and wheelchair-bound.
With Jarrod presumed dead, Burke is able to get all of the insurance money for himself. A disfigured man in a cloak strangles him and stages the murder as an act of suicide, and a few weeks later the same man murders Burke's fiancée, Cathy Gray. Her unemployed roommate, Sue Allen, comes home and stumbles upon the murderer. After a brief chase with him, Sue makes it to safety at the home of her friend, Scott Andrews. That night, the murderer steals Cathy's body from the local morgue.
A drive east down the 210 Freeway past Pasadena leads to Monrovia, a relaxed city that stretches up into the San Gabriel Mountains. White picket fences and picture-perfect bungalows make it a popular filming location, but of the 28 single-family homes currently on the market, roughly half are listed for more than $1 million. Los Angeles County’s median home price soared to an all-time high of $795,000 in September. Depending on where you’re looking, that sum can buy a starter home or a family estate, a 700-square-foot bungalow in the city or a 3,000-square-foot dwelling in the desert.
Brennan and Sgt. Jim Shane interview Wallace about Jarrod and his assistants, and later Shane remembers that an alcoholic prisoner in Sing Sing, who painted a recreation of "The Last Supper" in his cell, was recently paroled. They pick up Leon for questioning and after finding on him an inscribed watch belonging to the missing man, continue the interrogation. At dusk, Sue goes to the museum to meet Scott for a date and enters the darkened establishment. She again approaches the figure of Joan of Arc and still troubled by it, climbs up for a closer look. When she inadvertently knocks off the brown wig, she finds blonde hair underneath and exclaims to herself that it is Cathy's body.

For the next two years, DACOR held its luncheons, meetings and social gatherings in private homes and at other private clubs. On occasion they also used the townhouse at 1718 H Street, NW owned by “The Family,” a small group of retired military and diplomatic officers. A prominent member of that group, Ambassador Grew, advised DACOR early in 1954 that The Family’s townhouse would be sold and suggested that DACOR purchase it. Following successful negotiations, DACOR took title to the property and all of its contents in 1954. This was already true in the early 1800s when the nations first power brokers built magnificent homes in the shadow of the newly constructed White House. They chose this location to signal their own prestige but also to provide a degree of convenience proximity made it easier for decision makers to gather informally to hash out the critical matters of the day. The house located at 1801 F Street, today known as the DACOR Bacon House, was one such home. Completed in 1825, it is one of the few remaining early private homes in the Presidents Neighborhood. Among the discreet talks hosted at the elegant mansion in recent years was one between the ambassadors of Armenia and Azerbaijan, which have been fighting over the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh for decades. The house’s history is rich with meetings between diplomats and other officials from different countries. They started soon after construction was completed under its original owner, Tench Ringgold, a businessman and U.S. Marshal for Washington, D.C. According to scholar Terry Walz, the Ringgolds lavishly entertained the capital’s elite, including former President James Monroe. In 1875, then-owner Sallie Carroll rented the house to the Russian Imperial Legation, whose head, Baron Nikolai Shishkine, hosted various events. Two years later, Grand Duke Alexei, Tsar Alexander II’s son, paid a visit.
